Haikuware hits the 300 user mark! E-mail
(4 votes)
Written by Dennis d'Entremont

As of today Haikuware has hit the 300 user mark. This comes just before our one year anniversary (May 19). Some may say that 300 users in one year is not very much but in a niche that's as small as this I would say we have been extremely successful.

Thanks to all the user's for making our site what it is today!

Cheers!

Gnash Port Status Update E-mail
(4 votes)
Written by Karl vom Dorff

One of our users was wondering what ever happened to the Gnash port (open source flash) started almost two years ago by Michael Lotz. I had actually forgotten about that, so... good question! What did ever happen to it??

Community members may have remembered posts at Iscomputeron of images showing some functional ability of the Gnash port under BeOS like this:

Well, sadly the project has been discontinued for a number of reasons. You could read more about that in our forum.

Too bad, flash is sometimes annoying in terms of ad generated content, but it's having a more important role and increased presence in online video playback.

Hot off the press, the bounties are making some serious headway! We're pleased to announce that Oliver has made a public release of the bluetooth stack for Haiku to test! He even gave it a cool release name, Arce, wonder what that means? :-p

Macbook bounty update E-mail
(3 votes)
Written by Karl vom Dorff

Christopher (chrisjp), who took on our Macbook bounty (the requested bounty sum has been met), wrote us an update to how his work is progressing. We may add, that through this bounty, additional hardware/laptops may also benefit. For example, Haikuware user clebin's Fujitsu-Siemens laptop has similar hardware to the Macbook.

Chris writes:

"The port is coming along well. I finished up adding support for the internal display in the intel_extreme driver. It works nicely in native mode (1280x800) and I'll be sending along the patches to the mailinglist this week. I updated makebootable to support building to a partition entirely from within OSX, so that was a big help in development. I started working on the ISight driver and got some functionality going in uhci, but it isn't completely functional, since I didn't realize the ehci(usb 2.0 high speed) driver was lacking isochronous transfers so that is something I will have to add in. Right now i'm working on the hda/sigmatel part of the port, and hopefully should have basic sine wave playback going soon. I haven't had a chance to narrow down the keyboard/touchpad usb bug, but I do have some areas where I suspect we maybe having troubles. If any of you have a macbook and are able to test natively (i.e. install to a partition) please let me know."

Why Not Help Linux? E-mail

Reading Koki's recent summary of the LugRadio event, one part struck me and probably a lot of other Haiku users as well (including DarkWyrm). That is, the part where a man approached Koki and then asks him, 'why don't you just help with Linux instead?' Before Koki could even begin to start answering, the man rudely walked away.

Well, the answer is 'because Joe User is a person, too'! (clearly not because the penguin (Tux) is cuter than Haiku's leaves) :-p

And here's a more detailed explanation.

Multi-User & Activity Monitor E-mail

Written by Karl vom Dorff

Chris Simmons, at Haikunews (to whom we'd like to welcome back to the scene), writes that Francois Revol is working on making Haiku multi-user, or at least a login application thus far. Additionally, Francois has made a replicant out of the new 'Activity Manager' that Axel Doerfler has steadily been working on! You can see both in the very cool screenshot at Haikunews ;)

Haikuware Superpack Adjusted E-mail
(9 votes)
Written by admin

Haikuware's Superpack for Vmware has been renamed and adjusted to comply with Haiku's Distro Guidelines. It will be now known as 'Senryu'.

Senryu is a form of short poetry, like a Haiku, in fact, they're so similar, people have trouble telling them apart. "Senryū tend to be about human foibles while haiku tend to be about nature, and senryū are often cynical or darkly humorous while haikus are serious".

There'll be two versions:

1) Developer Edition
2) Personal Edition

The Developer Edition contains pre-built build tools, Haiku's sources, plus some applications developers may find useful. The image cuts down the need to download gigabytes of data (it's only ~135mb), and saves hours of time figuring out and building an environment by having a pre-built environment that's ready to use immediately - 'it just works'.

The personal edition also contains Haiku's build environment (minus the sources), but has more applications on it that may be of more interest to the end-user. It is meant to demonstrate Haiku's capabilities.

Both images have support for video, audio, network and burning out of the box. We will try to update the User Edition weekly, while the developer edition will be updated less frequently; as needed. There's still a bit of work to do regarding licenses and copyrights, but we'll resolve this soon. Both versions are immediately available. In addition, we'll once again, provide  Virtual Box, Qemu, and Parallels images, but these won't be maintained.
